MINING

The magazine tunnel in the Kuranui mine, Thames, is now in 144 ft, leaving 6ft to complete the contract. The manager reports that the country is still firm, and during last week a 3in leader was passed through. The quartz broken is kindly, and is showing good minora], but not sufficient work ■ has been done to ascertain its value. The rise on No. 3 loader was extended 6ft during the week. The country is mild andosite, interlaced with numerous mineral seams. Tho leader is 7in wide, and the quartz looks well, and is showing nice bands of copper pyrites. The last issuo of the Mercantile Gazette contains the following registration:—Pringlo and Party. Capital, £2000 into 2000 shares of £1 oach. Subscribers; J. Pringle, 500; M. T. Patrick, 500; C. "'TALISMAN CONSOLIDATED. (Fbou Oub Own Coehbspondent.)

WAIHI, May 9. Development work during the past three or four weeks has disclosod nb changes ot moment in the Talisman mine. No. 13 winze in the Bonanza chute, on the Maria reef, is now down about ,135 ft befow the fourteenth level, and a further 15ft of sinking will reach the random of a fifteenth level. The reef, which carried high'grade ore for 110 ft to 112 ft and then showed a falling-off in values, is still low-grade, but a strong and well-defined body of stone (wider than the winze) is showing, and the encasing country rock continues of a favourable description. / Owing to tho presence of water in Nos. 6 (north) and 19 (south) winzes from No. 14 level, sinking has for the time being been suspended, but' work will be resumed as soon as an outlet for the water is found, the intention being to carry down all three winzes to tho fifteenth level and drive north and south on the Bonanza chute, in order to be- in a position to push pn the development of tho Maria reef- when the main Talisman shaft gets down. The drive south on the Maria reef at No. la level is still being pushed out, and the ore body is at present low-grade. In this direction about 150 ft has yet to be driven to reach the point where tho last run of pay ore made in the Dubbo section at the level. At No? 13' level south the No. 8 crosscut east to intersect the Welcome reef 'is out above the distance at which it was expected that tho lode would be intercepted, assuming that it maintained the same dip as at No. 11 lovel, but so far tho ore body has not been met with, and the country rock in the' face not of as favourable a description as formerly. :The crosscut west from the Woodstock shaft to intersect the Maria reef is now out 100 ft, and is a good class of country. In the last few feet of driving two or three quartz stringers have bepn met with, but the reef is not yet to hand. According to survey, it was anticipated that it would be cut about 80ft in, and it has seemed probable that the lode has changed its direction going down.

THE CROWN MINE. ' (Fboh Our Own Cobhespondbnt.) WAIHI, May 9. Although no official information has been so far given out, 'it is understood that future operations at the New Zealand Crown mine will be confined to the exploration of the property at- a great depth, with a view to ascertaining whether payable reefs exist below the present working. The adoption of such a scheme would necessarily mean a larger curtailment of the working staff and the cassation of general mining and milling operations until tho prospects of the mine at that depth have been determined.
