SOUTHLAND NOTES.

(Fbom Oub Own Correspondent.) , INVERCARGILL, October 10. Tho grass pastures in the Edend&le and Wyndhamdistricte look to ihave more feed in them than any south of Dunedin, and tho general appearance of the stock running on them endorses this iraprceeion. At the Edendalo Dairy Factory the daily intake is already up to 3000 gallons, at Menzies Ferry it is 2000 gallons, and at Brydone about 1200 gallons. This total of 6000 gallons is the product of about 150 suppliers. Tho' secretary of tho Southland Sawmill Workers' Union has returned from a visit to tho whito nine mills in tho district, and states that with tho advent of the dairying season there has been recently much greater activity than for some time pa6t. Mr O'Byrne says the time is not far distant when it will be difficult, if not imposible, to get white pine in the Southland bush owing to the demand which is 6ure to increase as time passes and tho fact that supplies are limited. It appears, consequently, that in the future prices must rise, and he understands that action has already been taken by the millers interested with ft viow to higher values being paid by the user of the timber. '

The. kanakaiia, or lamprey, which come up the Matnura River to the falls every year, have boon very plentiful this season. Thev usually make their appearance ear'y in September, but this year they did not arrive until near the end of the month. Some of the local youths have made food cheques out of them this season, tho biggest catch .being obtained by Messrs Duncan Bros., who secured 11 sacks, eight of which they forwarded to Maori customere at Temuka, two to as far as Featherston. in tho North Island, and one to Port Chalmers. Messrs _ Duncan Bros, say that the kanaka.na,_ which axo a species of eel, are thicker this year than they have seen them for some time, and in places were to be snon 3ft deep, hanging on to the rocks, where they wr-re captured. Several Maoris have visited Mataura in quest of them this year.
