HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM.
(I'eb United Peess Association.) WELLINGTON, September 1. The High Commissioner cabled to the Agricultural Department undor date August 31) (quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):— Mutton.—There is a better tone in. the market this week. Quotations: Canterbury, 4 3-16 d per lb; North Island, 43-16 d for best quality; light weight, 4 3-16 d. , River Plate Mutton.—There is only a small supply. Lamb.—A better tone in the market this week, and prices have slightly advanced for all grades, with a better demand for medium. Heavy-weight Canterbury, twos, 5 9-16 d; heavy-weight, fours, 4id; other than Canterbury, s£d. The beef market is steady, with a better demand for hinds. New Zealand hinds, 4£d, fores 3d, Supplies of .American chilled beef are large; hinds, 43-d; fores 2|d. Butter.—No alterations, in the market since last week, and no change in prices. French has advanced 2s to 4s per cwt. The cheese market js firm, with no change in prices for Canadian, but New Zealand has advanced 3s per cwt. Some offers havo been made for finest cheese for delivery in equal quantities from December, 1913, to June, 1914 (inclusive), at 66s landed. Hemp.—The Manila market is depressed, as second-hand speculators are selling at close market. Spot hemp is» fairlv 6teady at £31 to £32; October to December, £30; January to Maroh, £30 10s. The market for New Zealand -hemp is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker. New Zealand, good fair grade, £30 (nominal); fair, £26 lte; August to October, good fair, £30 15s; fair, .£26 15s. The output from Manila for tHe week was 23,000 bales. The wool market is quiet. Coarse crossbreds of all grades are very firm. -Merino prices are cosier; merino sixties, 2s 3|d. It is reported that the inclusion of free wool in (the United Statee's new tariff is practically assured. With Balkan affairs clearing, prospects are favourable for next* l month's sales. Cocksfoot Seed.—The market is quiet. New Zealand seed is offered -at 495, but buyers are holding back. Danish crops are reported good, and seed 'is considered cheaper at 465. 1 BUTTER IN COOL STORE. (Per .United Pbess association.) WELLINGTON, September 1. The following figures show the quantity of butter in cool storage at various ports throughout-tho dominion on August 31:— Auckland, 1895 boxes'; New Plymouth, .884; Patca, 400; Wellington, 2228; Lyttelton, 117; Dunedin, 121:—total, 5645. The total on August 31, 1912, waa 8542 boxes. s
