PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT
A PECULIAR CASE. (P«* Umnn Pn*m Aiwcutio* V INVERCARGILL, August 30. The native Bsini,, otherwise Matepa, who was brought to Blutf by the AngloNorman from Maiden Island, where he is alleged to have murdered - another native, was before Mr Cruickshank, S.M., at the Police Court on Saturday, the charge being that he was a prohibited immigrant. About a fortnight ago the accused was before the court in connection with the same charge, and he was then remanded, aa doubt was entertained as to -whether the accused came within the definition of a prohibited immigrant, a native of the Cook Island'dependency of New, Zealand. In the meantime- Inspector Norwood explaintd the position, and this was 'to the effect that Mni came within the Prohibited Immigrant Act. 'The Magistrate said that as the man had been taken of! the boat by the. police the charge would hardly nriso. Under the circumstances it would be better to place accused on board the boat hpain, and if he canto ashore.lie could be,rearrested later, This was done/ and the man was rearrested and. remanded till Wednesday next. 1
