CHARGE OF MURDER.
DEATH AT A MENTAL HOSPITAL. WARDER ARRESTED. (Pee United Peess Association.) CHRISTOHURCH, July 26. Joseph Martin Chapman, a warder at the Sunnyside Mental Hospital, 36 years of age, was arrested to-day on a charge of having murdered Charles Thomas M'Meekan, an inmate of the institution. M'Meekan was married, and was 42 years of age. . He died on July 9, and in the ordinary course an inquest was held at Sunnyside before Mr Bailey, who returned a verdict that death was due to haemorrhage of the lungs. It 13 stated', however that the circumstances connected with M'Meekan's death were such that the authorities caused further investigations to be made.
It is understood that a? a consequence Chapman was suspended and the whole matter was put in the hands of the police for further investigation. The' detectives made very searching inquiries into the matter, and this morning Detectives Ward and Torrens arrested Chapman oh a charge of murder.
Chapman will be brought before the court on Monday.
