FIRES
(Per United Press Association.)
HASTINGS, July 25. A fire occurred this afternoon in a fiveroomed cottage in Avenue road, occupied by Mr Herbert Pullen, and owned by Mr John Cowan, jun. The flames had a Rood hold when the alarm was given, and despite the efforts of the firemen the interior of tho building was gutted. No one was at home when the fire commenced. The insurances on the house are £450 in the Commercial Union Office, and on the furniture £100 in the Norwich Union Office. Very little furniture was saved.
A telegram was received last night from Gisborne indicating that there had been a serious tiro at Tc Karaka. Only the last section of the message reached us, containing a list of insurances on some of the buildings destroyed. It would appear, however, that a tobacconist shop, owned by Mr M'Mahon, now of Tauranga, and leased by Mr S. Heffernan, was burned. This building -was insured for £165 in the South British Office, and the stock for a similar amount in the same office. An hotel seems to have been affected, the licensee having a policy of £1100 on his stock and furniture in the Roval Office. Besides theso a bank building, insured for £75, and a cottage, insured for £100, were destroyed, theso bo■ins owned by Mr H. F. North.
