MB J. W. SAUBB,

The death is announced of Mt J. W. , Saucr, Minister of Justice and Native Affairs. Mt Saner took over General Hertzog's portfolios in December on the resignation of the latter.

The Hon. J. W. Sauer has been closely identified with Sccth African politics for many years. His father was a magistrate of the Orange Free State, and Mr Sauer .was educated at tho South African College. He practised for, oomo years as an attorney in the Aliwal North District of Cape Colony, and' after his entry into Parliament wa6 till 1376 a follower of Sir Gordon Sprigg. He was Secretary for Nativo, Affaire under Sir Thomas Scanlaa from 1881-84, Colonial Secretary under Mx .Rhodes in 1893, and Loader of the Opposition till 1896. Ho became Minister of Railways and Harbours in United South Africa, in 1910 and Minister of; Agriculture in 1912. Ufi had heen elected six tunes as member for Aliwal North, and may bo described as a "philatrthropica! Radical." He has tho further distinction of having refused a knighthood.
