PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tie usual fortnightly meeting of the Port CliiUmers Borough Council was held last evening, tliere bciny present the Mayor (Mr D. M. Maweon), Cre Powell, Williamsan, Soollay, Perry, Fail, Morgan, Stevcneon, Anderson, and Pratley.

CONDOLENCE. Before commencing the ordinary business the- Mayor made feeling reference to_ the death oi Mrs C. Stevenson, an old readout of Port Chalmers, and one whom all respected for her many estimable virtues. On liis Worship's motion, a vote of sympathy with tho bereaved family -was •carried ill silence, councillors standing.

COBBK3PONDEXOE. M. Maweon wrote stating that there was no access to her sections in Laing street, and requested that some approach be made to them.—Referred to Works Committee for. report. ■ i

J. Blair Mason, Secretary Otago Har,bour Board, wrote stating that the council's system of charging for water supplied to vessels—viz., Is 6d per 1000 gallons, or 6d per tun of 252 gallons—was considered! by the board to be exorbitant, and suggested that a uniform rate should bo oharged per 1000 gallons, a small extra charge to bo added for attendance.—The Mayor explained that the charge of Is 6d per thousand gallons was for supplies to shipping, tho other charge being for special water supplies within the borough.—Tho matter was referred to the Water Committee for report. S. Perry wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of the Pvcservoir road, and stating that ho would hold the council responsible for any injury to lib family or property through its subsidence.—ln the discussion which followed Councillors stated there was some doubt as to whose jurisdiction this road came under. It was very little used.—Tho matter was referred to tho Water Committee, for report.

T. W. "Waite, district traffic manager, wrote, in reply, stating that tho council's request for a ladies' waiting room at tho Mussel Bay railway siding was being duly inquired into, and an early reply would be forthcoming.—Received. REPORTS. The Water Committee reported l that a water service had been repaired in Belle Vuo p : ace. Tie forester during tho past fortnight had Ixeri planting out forest trees, lifting and sorting out seedlings from tho seed beds in readiness for lining out in tho nursery, and clearing gorsc and broom near tho reservoir.—Adopted. Tho Works Committee reported tbat' tho channel in Macandrew 'road had been cleaned out, and tho grass and mud removed. The overhanging rock had also been removed. Rotten rock had been spread at Flagstaff Hill, and tho track leading from Peninsula Beach road to Belle Vuo place had been oleancd and made good where required—Adopted.

The Finance Committee reported that the receipts since last meeting totalled £195 12s 9(1, and accounts amounting to £107 15s Hero recommended for payment. Tho total debit account was stated to be £1899 15s Bd.-Adoptcd.

Tim Town Clerk (Mr James Fraser) reported at length with regard to the meeting of contractors and representatives of local bodies held at Duncdin on Friday last before Mr Trigtrs, and stated that assessors had been appointed to deal with the various matters contained in the schedule. Ho further stated that provision was mtido for local bodies to obtain an exemption, provided they paid their employees * tho mini7num ruling rate of wages, and the assessors were making arrangements to secure exemption for local bodies.—The report was ordered to be laid on tho table. DISPOSAL OF GARBAGE. Cr urged that the staff should exercise special vigilance in connection with tho sanitary arrangements of the town, in order to minimiso as far as possible the risk of infection from smallpox. Ho further remarked that a large quantity of household refuse that was now cast oiu for removal could easily be disposed of by burning. By adopting that course, householders would assist very largely towards keeping their premises and the borough in a sanitary statb. —Cr Morgan's remarks were warmly endorsed by the council, and adopted.
