But for the fact of it being a weekday, there is no doubt a far greater number of persons would have seized the opportunity to view the Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Niagara in Woolwich Dock, says the Sydney Shipping List just to hand. She was taken in for cleaning and painting during the morning, and the whole operation of getting the huge vessel—she is the largest merchant vessel ever docked in Sydney—on the chocks was viewed with interest by those fortunate enough to be present, She was floated out on the following day. The Niagara will commence her second voyage to Vancouver on the 23th inst.

The annual report for 1912 of the Royal Packet S.N. Company, received by last mail, states that in. view of the* continued growth of the company's business, important additions wore again made to the fleet during trie year. Ten new steamers were added to tlie fleet during 1912; four more the Tasnian and Hotrtman for the Australian service) were completed since tine beginning of the present year, while ten more vessels have beeij ordered, and arc to be delivered by the end of this or early next year. These 24 new vessels represent a tonnage of 65,000 tons, and wlien they are completed the company's fleet will consist, of 92 steamers and motor-ships, aggregating 160.000 tons gross. An interesting feature of this building programme" is that it includes three Diesel motor-ships of 1800 tons each and one of 100 tons. The experiment with the cargo motorship Scmbilan (372 tons) having proved successful, the conipany ha 6 decided to adopt the Diesel engine alsojor some of the passenger vessels. The mileage covered by tho company's steamers during 1912 was 2,393,000 miles, being an increase of about 130,000 miles against last year. The amount of cargo carried was 1,464.066 tons, while the passengers numbered 122,047.
