MR AND MRS J. B. SHACKLOCK HONOURED.

COMPLIMENTARY SQCIAL.

There was 3. largo gathering .of supporters and friends of Mr J, B. Sbacklock at tiiio Kensington Hall last night, the occasion being a social in honour of' him and Mrs Shacklock, ''

Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., presided,'and after a programme of .excellent musical and vocal items had been rendered, with appreciative effect he presented. Mr Shacldock, on behalf- of his late constituents, with a beautifully-framed illuminated address, which set forth the appreciation of the resident's, of South Dunedin. of Mr Shacklock's services in their behalf during the timo be 'had represented them on the South Dunedin Borough' Council and the Dunedin City Council. In ipaking the presentation Mr Sid'ey referred to the zeal with which Mr Siiacklock 'entered public life .20 years ago as a member of the Macandrew road School. Committee and to the energy ho had put into municipal politics during the 17 years he had been connected ■with them. Ho eaid he- had no doubt, that .Mr Shacklock, in view of his recent defeat, was inclined to be a little disheartened, but lie had no reason to be, espefcially seeing that the contest was a triangular one, and the votes he secured should encourage him to take heart. They had only to look at the support he received iu the district which knew hitn best, where he received a majority over " u e other two candidates, to know that his ioug years of faithful service were appreciated and that he was well •and worthily recommended by a majority of the people with, wlhom he had for a long time been associated. This should encourage him for the future.

Ilis Worship the, Mayor (Mr W. Doivnie Stewart) complimented Mr Shaddock upon the honour done llini that evening, and paid a special tribute to hi 6 work as a member of the City Council. He had sat with him for six years on the council, and he could ea.y the citizens never had a more loyal representative to look after .their interests. The Mayor also eulogised Mrs Shaddock's work in behalf of her husband during the mayoral contest) and he thought it was a fitting recognition of her efforts in this connection that the electors had seen fit to make her a presentation in conjunction with her husband. He than landed Mrs Shaddock a case of silver spoons, suitably inscribed, amid applause. . Crs Cole and C. E. Statham, M.F., added their eulogies of ex-C'r Shacklook's work on the City Council, and expressed the hope that he would soon be on the council again, and also that he would occupy the position of Mayor in due course. Mr Shaddock, in replying in his own and his wife's behalf, said lie was grateful for all the eulogiums that had been bestowed upon him by the various speakers. He said lie saw present a number of people who had supported him ever sinoe they had prevailed upon him to enter municipal politics. In a reminiscent mood Mr Shaddock traversed the work done by the old South Dunedin Borough Council, with which ho had been associated, and he also referred to the widening of King Edward street, in connection with which it had bcea necessary to have special legislation passed. He had always done what he considered right, even at the risk of being on the side ot the minority. It v.-as always easier to be on the side of the majority or popular side, but that had not been his way. Ho had had many years of municipal life, and ho would now have a year as a member of the public and would be able to know something of their feelings and requirements and be in a far better position, to push their desires ne.xt year. He concluded by thanking all those who had contributed towards the function arranged for honouring Mrs Shaddock and himself, and resumed his seat amid intense applause. ■ A bountiful supper having been done justice to, the remainder of the evening was devoted to dancing, a thoroughly enjoyable function being brought' to a close shortly after midnight. Mr E. W. Dowland, as chairman of. the Men's Committee, Mrs Ruston, as head of the Ladies' Committee, and Mr A. Mawhinney, a$ secretary of the two committees, ,are deserving of special mention for the work they did in connection with the gathering.
