—In his annual report, the medical inspector of schools in Berwickshire laments, tho decline of t» p ?. vstcm of P»y' n ff {am servants in kind, because it ensured them a good supply of wholesome, nourishing food. Where they are not paid in kind they spend their money in tea and bread, and they scarcely ever get milk, whilo the oatmeal which at one time formed the most important article of their diet is going out. Tho r.'.edical inspector traces to this causo the fact that, though Berwickshire school children are above tho British standard in height and weight, 10 pc t, cent, fall below tho normal in nutrition. His report goes to confirm the opinion that on tho whole payment in kind is to the advantage of the labouies.
