Owing to ill-health Mr W. J. Paterson, of Mesons Chas. White and Co., ha 6 been •granted three months' leave of absence. Mr Paterson purposes spending some time in the North Island.

Archbishop Redwood received yesterday an official cablegram from Romo (6ays a Wellington telegram) announcing the appointment of tho A r cry Rev. Dean O'Shea, K.M., vicar-general of the arch diocese, as Coadjutor Archbishop of Wellington, with the right of succession.

A Wellington Press Association telegram fitatfh that Sir James Carroll continues to make satisfactory progress towards recovery from his recent severe illness, but will not be able to see visitors for another week or two.

Mr James Ij.irnet, Mayor of Hastings, died on Tuesday night (a Press Association message st-atec-), at tho age of SV. He underwent cm operation for appendicitis about three weeks ago. Ho was a member of a number of local bodies. He was elected Mayor in 1911, and was ix> turned unopposed for two successive terms. Ho leaves a widow and five sons.

On Tuesday ovening a large number ot i.'lie. friends and congregation of Dr and Mrs l.'ommins met at .the Medical Electrical Institute, in Rattray street, to wish them God-speed on a well-earned holiday to Australia, and alpo to present Dr Commins with a handsome travelling rug and Mrs Ccmmins with a fiolid gold cross studded with pearls and. a Morocco handbag, in appreciation of their .spiritual teaching and healing work. In response, Dr Cominins heartily returned thanks for the unexpected expression of goodwill, and said that 16 years had passed sinoe he and Mrs Commins first commenced their mission in Dunedin. Both felt the need of a rest, and when absent would have the happiest recollections •of Dunedin and the many friends they had left behind.
