CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW.

FIXE ALL-ROUND EXHIBITS. The winter show of the Dunedin Horticultural Society was held yesterday, and crowds took advantage of inspecting ilowers, fruit, and vegetables. The attendance in the evening was very large, the Garrison Hall being thronged with visitors. A stringed orchestra was in attendance and p-ayed during the afternoon and evening. . The judging was undertaken by Messrs D. Taiuiock and W. M'Laren s.o far as flowers and vegetables were concerned, and Mr Goodwin (agricultural Department) made tlie awards in fruit. Ate Iteid judged the decorative exhibit*. The display made in pot plante was a very good one. especially considering it is a backward season, In the c!a?s three chrysanthemums, no less than eiglu blooms in each variety, Mr E. A. Hamel came first with a nice collection of Luxford, Beatrice May, and President Norrin. Mr Hamel also stcurcd second place with three nice blooms. There were two entries in nurserymen's table.-, and while both were good they differed widely. As far as effectiveness and appearance were concerned the second prize table might, in the opinion of many, be regarded as tho superior, but the first prize table was more in conformity with the intention of the competition. The first prize table shown by Mr Youngson contained some good blooms, but consisted chiefly ofasparagus, ferns, foliage geraniums, maidenhair, ferns, dracaenas, eniiiax, etc ; the second prize table exhibited by Mr Hamel consisted largely of blooms. Both tab.es were artistically ■ arranged, and deserved the special attention paid them by visitors. In cut blooms the champion taole-contained some very fine Wnliani Turners, Lady Talbors, Luxfords, and Mrs U. (J. Kcl/y, these being about Ihe best blooms in a comprehensive and excellent display, in six vases Japanese chrysanthemums ihe outstanding blooms in the winning exhibit were William Turner and Mrs G. G. Kelly, and there were gome beautiful incurved (lowers with silver reversal. Mr Hamel won here,' and aiso in the class lor 12 Japanese chrysanthemums. In this eiass tho conspicuous'blooms were a white William .Turner and a fine specimen of tho Hon. Mrs Lopes. A beautiful crimson W. A. Reitl was also included in the collection. In six Japanese chrysanthemums Mr Hamel again conies to the front, conspicuous among the blooms shown being a William Turner, a Mrs G. C. Kelly, and n F. S. Vallis. In a similar competition for three yellows and three whites Mr Hamel showed three white Turners and three yellow Lady Talbots of exceptionally fine quality. In new and distinct varieties, not exhibited previously in Dunedin, Mr Hamel successfully showed a beautiful Mrs Gilbert Drabble among other blooms. It was a beautiful, broad-pet.tlled, pure white flower, and, perfect as it was, it had not quite reached the open stage, But (or this fact if would probably have stood a good chance of being, adjudged the champion bloom of the show. This honour was conferred upon a very fine William Turner exhibited by Mr J. 11. Kingsland, of Invercargill. Mr Kingsla.nd is hit amateur grower, and for that reason his win is all the more honourable. In Mr 11. T. Travena's winning collection of the Japanese order was, an especially line white Lady Carmichael and a very good yellow specimen of the Marquis of Northampton, and probably these two blooms were equal to anything shown in the open class. Mr Kingsland came second with a good collection which included notably line F. S. Vallis, Mrs K, Luxford, and Lady Talbot. Mr John Stewart was the succcssiul competitor for the best three Japanese chrysanthemums in tho amateur section, his win being secured with a W. Mease, a Lady Talbot, e.nd another variety. Mrs J. Maclean, of Oainnru, obtained second prize, a W. A. Reid and a Miss A. Finch being conspicuous in her exhibits. Among the flowers shown by Mr W. M. Real in tho first prize lot for 12 Japanese blooms (amateur) were a Glitter, a W. A. Reid, and a Mrs C. 11. Toddy. These were about the best in his collection. The second prize taken was Mr Jno. Stewart, the most attractive flowers shown bv Mr Stewart being a W. Mease, a Lady Talbot, and a N.C.S. Jubilee. Mrs E. A. Hamel secured first place in the open basket competition, with a very tastefully arranged basket of flowers and foliage, the prevailing colour biing bronze a no. god. .vl.uuui-n lir lern and asparagus were judiciously used in the arrangement. It might, however, be considered by some that the blooms used were somewhat largo for decorative purposes. Miss A. M'lntyrc oame, second with a basket very nicely arranged, apd made up of .autumn leaves and crimson and gold ehrysanthemums._ Tn the amateur competition in basket work _ the display was perhaps even better than that made in the open closs, M : ss Una Hamel showing a very neat basket of decorative varieties of chysanthemums eminently suitable for the purpose to which they were devoted. Mrs W. Cross came second with o. very tastefully arranged basket. Miss Hamel was atrain successful in the vase competition, a.nd Mrs 11. T. Travena gained second prize with a nice vase of flowers, though the decorative work was possiblv slightly overdone. In the second bowl competition Mrs W. Cross successfully exhibited a nice collection of flowers, ash leaves, maidenhair fern, asparagus, and sprays of birch being very effectively used to embellish the bowl.

The display in vegetables was excellent. lii the competition for the Skene and Fleming Cup there were two competitors, ,and Mrs John Peat was awarded first i;lace for a table of exceptionally fine vegetables. The exhibit of fruit- was not extensive, but what there was. was excellent. The apples from the Otago Central could scarcely have been bettered, and Mr N. P. Kloagh deserved his win. §omc c: the poars showed a faint trace of scab, but on the whole they were very • free from disease. The grapes. ' mostly ros colmors and muscats, were also good.
