THE OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY. TO THE EDITOR. Sin — Your reply to my query of last week, concerning the Otago Central Railway is somewhat laboured. Considering that the lino already runs through the Central for 130 miles it seems very improbable that a further extension of 20 miles, at a. cost of £200,000, will make the line pay any more than at present—via., little more than working expenses. Doubtless Dunedin will get the extension—unkind people might say on account of the strong support supplied to the Reform party at the last election,— but it would bo interesting to know how much the Otago Central contributed to the railway last year. It would show perhaps why the South Island lines are not so remunerative as those in tiio North
