At tie ■ annual meeting of the N.Z.D.A., ield at Gore, the above question 'was discussed, and on the motion of Messrs A. Kroning (Gore) and W. Davis (Romahapa) the following resolution was carried:—"That^ this annual meeting of the Jfew Zealand draughts Association expresses its. utmost confidence in, and support of, the action of the Executive of the Australasian and New Zealand Draughts Association (at Dunedin) in relation to the matter of the Australasian tourney and title."

NOTES ON THE LATE TOURNEY, , By Alma,

The Gore Committee and players excelled themselves in arrangements that made for the success of the tourney; and that's saying 'everything. Mi A. Kroning, secretary to the committee, was just the right man in the right place. To his splendid efforts is due in a large measure the success achieved.

Several new competitors thi3 year—Messrs E. Muir (Dunedin), J. Young (Sakaia), J. Wilson (Inveroargill), J. Marnell (Wyndham), John Gardiner (Gore). Three out of the five new men secured prizes. % Messrs T. Rae, J. Murdoch, A. Matheson, and T. Ayson were expected competitors, but business carea prevented them entering.' Tho old warrior, "Jim" Scott, put in an appearance for a day or two, trying his hand on the champions when he got a chance. He knows a thing or two yet. The system of playing both sides of an opening at each sitting worked smoothly and well.

No appeals to the referee, no disputes, every loser taking his defeat with a smiling countenance. That's not always the experience of tourneys. Calderwood secured two byes, and Gardiner and H. Morris one each, during tho championship tourney. The Gore Tourney Committee collected over £90 for the tournament just concluded, and paid out £70 in prize-money. This is worth noting in reference to the rather eneering remark of an Australian correspondent of the Witness, who spoke of "out of the way corners" of New Zealand, in which he evidently included Gore. The fact is that Gore 13 one <>f the strongest draughts centres in the Dominion, Tho big Mataura, flood effectively scattered 'ho tourney players on Saturday, March 29. Gardiner ws3 scon parading tho verandah y<r-a in tho main street. Calderwood was iJiown to have taken to the hills on tho ■sist. at 3 a.m. Referee M'Kinna, mounted on his steed from early morn, was engaged persuading sleeping citizens to " get a move on." Hilliker and Penny were across the river at East Gore. _ Vice-president Gray was eorely pressed dealing with the " had position " of five feet of water in Wright, Stephenson, and Co.V stores, while Davis and his respected father had to "flit" to-tho liousetop3, there viewing the position serenely. In explanation of the flood Sir Kroning assured the draughts players that tho committee were only trying to give them some "variations," and (hoy succeeded. DRAUGHTS ITEMS. N.Z.D.A.-Mr F. Hilliker. has kindly supplied a report of the annual meeting of tho Kew Zealand Draughts Association, held in Goro during tourney time. Lack of space necessitates holding it over. The Champion.—Mr Gardiner, the new Australasian champion, was in Dunedin last Friday and Saturday, but did not indulgo in the game.
