At last night's meeting of the Drainage Board tho secretary (Mr Esther) mentioned that tliree members of the staff had successfully passed the first section of the accountants' examination, and that an old member of tho engineering stall' had been appointed Government engineer at Suva. Last Wednesday evening a large number of Ravensbourno residents mot in the Council Chambers and made a presentation to Mr J. Gordon, assistant station master, who has been transferred to Allanton. Tile Mayor (Mr H. E. Mollor) presided, and handed Mr Gordon a handsome dressingcase, at the same timo wishing him rapid promotion in the service. Several other residents also spoke in a similar strain. Later, Mr M'Cluskey tendered a smoke social, and a very successful function was brought to a close with cheers for the departing railway official.

Mr Gilbert Buchanan, who, passed away at his residence, Greenbank, near Outram, yesterday, was one of the first residents of the district. He arrived in the ship Philip Laing, in 1848, along with-his parents, who were well-known residents of Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow. In his younger days Mr Buchanan took to shepherding, and in that capacity had charge of the late Mr Leo's run, which extended from Woodside to Leo Stream. In conjunction with his father lie purchased his present farm in 1858, and haa resided on it ever since. In the early days Mr Buchanan served on several local bodies, but a slight lameness which overtook him caused him to resign everything but tho eldership of the local church, a position which ihe has occupied for 50 years. Ho was for many years superintendent of the Sunday school. Mr Buchanan was a man who had read a great deal, and although 86 years of age, he maintained his memory in a high degree until the end. Ho is survived by a family of three sons and four daughters.
