HOME CHEESE AND BUTTER MARKETS.

Mr J. R. Scott, secretary of the South Island Dairy Association, has received cable advice from lx>ndon which slates thai, - notwithstanding increased Homo production of dices'- on that of last season, consumption has »o increased that English and Scotch cheese are advancing in price. Canadian exports will show a considerable shortage, and the market for Canadian is advancing. Tile prospect of Rood prices for New Zealand K»s improved considerably, and. the prospect of dearer meat has strengthened tho position. The cable gees on to say that finost'biitter, including Danish, French, - and New Zealand, will bo short during winter, and Australion uncertain: second grade alone is likolv to be plentiful. General trade conditions in the United Kingdom are excellent, pointing io improving markets.

PRICK OP BRAN INCREASED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, September 6. (Received September 6, at 10 p.m.) Tlicro lwis been an advance of 10s per ton in the price of bran. CIIRISTCIIURCII MARKETS. (Pen Unitku PiiEss Association.) CJIRISTCIIURCH, September 6. A fair amount of activity in being shown in shipping grain, but there is a general complaint by merchants of shortage of s|mcl' in Homo steamers. New Zealand shippers are handicapped by the higher freights ruling from Australia. The amount of grain being got away is giving relief to tho grain stores, which aro well-lillcd, and must bo cleared before tho new season sets in. Very little grain is offered by farmere, who aro now very busy with spring work. Wheat is .firm, but tlicro is no business passing. Oats iiro also maintaining values. The |iotato market is weaker. Auckland is well supplied with heavy forward sales made to that market for delivery this month.. No information is available yet as to the terms of tho modified regulations relating to tho importation of potatoes in Australia, but it is believed that tho certificates required from farmers and mcrchants will bo dono away with through tho other conditions relating to new sacks, and inspection will bo retained. Tho grader at Jiyttelton has not yet received fresh instructions, and is working tinder tho former conditions. The prico is easier, merchants only offering £7 at country stations. Some sales have been made though growers aro mostly holding for £7 53 and £7 10s. ■» PEDIGREE CATTLE SALE. (Pen United Phes3 AasocunoH.) NEW PLYMOUTH, September 6. Consignments namo from South Canterbury, North Otago, .Middlemarch, Tokomairiro, Ualclutha, and Invercargill, besides the usual quota from Dunedin and surrounding districts. As has been tho caso at several of our special sides for some considerable time, tho supply of high quality young horses fell far. short of tho demand, and many buyers who were propared to purchase sound young animals for making up plough tenuis and lor town and country carting and contracting at prices ranging from £38 to £45, had to fill their requirements with animals of an inferior quality and aged and stale sorts. A specially good fivo-yenr-old gelding, by Merry .Morning (imp.), offered on account of Mr W. J; Watson (Glenledi), was bought by Messrs Brown Bros. (Lawrence) at'£4B. two rising four-year-old geldings, elifty. upstanding sorts, the property of Messrs Kcnyon Bros. A big, heavy four-year-old gelding, belonging to Mr James M'Kowcn, realised £41, and several other young, sound sorts from £36 to £40. Marcs were in short supply, most vendors preferring to hold these till the parade sale, when moro breeders arc in attendance. Tho highest priced maro was a fouryoar-old by Black Knight (imp.) out of an Agitator mare, and was purchased by Mr W, D. B. Naylor (Adam's Flat) for £50; an aged mare by New Hone, offered on account of Mr Win. Leslie .(Evan's Flat), was secured by Mr B.
