<■ CONGRESS AT TIMARU. ll'xb U.mteii ?iiiss Association.) TIMARU, February 19. The conference of the New Zealand lirauch of the British Medical Association will open here to-morrow. This evening I lie visitors and a gathering of townspioplo listened to an address from the president, Dr li. V. Drew (Timaru), and were entertained at a social. The president dealt briefly with various subjects in a nontechnical manner, such ns consumption, cancer, insanity, tlio t«cth, alcohol, quackery, and the llritish Insurance liill. Tho keynote in relation lo diseases was that prevention is lielter than cure. The speaker recommended inspection of schools and the distribution ot plain advice regarding hygiene and the suppression of quacks. The State should, he said, exercise greater powers, as tlie health of the people was the greatest of national interest*. Crimiiuils and the feeble-minded should be segregated, Regarding alcohol, Dr Drew said that none should be allowed to use it until of 21 years of age, and that with the present laws enforced should be suilicient. A hearty vote of thanks was acconled to Dr Drew, on the motion of Dm ilarncttai'd Irwin, with compliments on the interesting address. The congress work will bo.•iii in the morning in committee. In the afternoon tlie members will lie the gticsts of the Hospital Hoard at a garden parly in the hospital grounds.
