By James Park, Profe.'sol of Mining Engineering in the Uni-. ■ versity of Otago, and Director of the Oiago School of Mines. London: Charles Griffin and Co. (Ltd.). 320 p.p., with 130 illustrations and two . plates. Price,.7a 6d.net. The first edition of this useful work was leviewed by ua so recently that thera is no need for moro than a brief notice of tho present edition. Wo should, however, say that a permil of its pages shows that it'has been subjcct to careful' revioion from cover to cover. Much new witter • has been added and many old subjects considerably extended, with tho result that the book now contains 100 pages more than it did when it firet appeared, together with a score and a-half now illustrations. Among tha additions that will be welcomed by engineers and surveyors aw the problems on chainagc corrections, and the description of micrometers as applied to theodolites. A complaint was not unjustly mado by reviewers of the liret edition thai, the chapter on Practical 'Agronomy was too condensed tx» W serviceable to any but professional surveyors. This, we are glad to notice, has been remedied by addition of many new diagrams and a fuller discussion of tho (ifi'rciioTnical definitions, determination of latitude, differences of latitude and longitude of major stations, relationshipo of Sidereal Time. Mean Time, and Right A-sconisiora, all of which will be of great service to studcn'.e and TCimg surveyorn. The chapter mi Triangulaiion has been augmented bv worked-out examples oi tho adjustment of the sides and angles of the quadrilateral, polygon, mid ray-trace chown in tabulated form. In the chapter on Engineering Surveying mlwny curves nro treated more fallv than formerly, and a new feature Tjf portion of the book u the computation and eettiing out ot transition curves. Tliis liook has now established itself its a recognised text-book in England and tlio oversea dominiono, and wo wash to congratulate both the author and publishers on tlie production of'a work that, wo aro sure. will bo welcomed as much by professional surveyors and engineers "as by etudeitfs for whom it was originally intended.
