Sir,—Your aub-Icader in to-day's issue has prompted very many to urge us to_ give rcasoiß in justification of the committco's rocomnipndation. We havo declined to bo drawn into any controversy, not being parties to tho transactioh.
If you will kindly permit a bare statement "of our position we- may bo saved from being misunderstood. Tho counoil's specification provided for alternative tenders being received for a Diesel plant. Wβ tendered, offering power in excess of that stipulated, which might havo been an advantage-. Wo have no doubt been fairly beaten on a price fcasis, jind so, whilst sorry that we havo not been" successful, wb havo still tho coreolation that wo offered an approved plant, embodving all our latest improvements, for the ensuring of efficient and economic working. We oai:not, of course, pronounce any opinion regarding Diesel engines made by other manufacturers.—We are, etc.,
