LAWRENCE-ROXBURGH RAILWAY.
TENDERS FOR BIG HILL TUNNEL.

WELLINGTON, January 24. A Very, large amount of business was' transacted by Cabinet to-day, the total authorisations under different headings being: - Roads, £14,600; railways, £10,672; and bridges, £4550. Among the road votes authorised the most important was £1000 for the Pon-garoa-Waiono road; £1300 on a £1 for £1 subsidy for the Pnkekawa road, Raglan; £750 for the Gisborne-Tolago Bay road, and £1500 for various roads to open up blocks in the Stratford district. Under the heading of railways there was an authorisation of £762 for the Midland Railway, and authorisations totalling £8500 on the Kaiwaka, Bickerstaff, and Otamatw sections of the north of Auckland line.
It was decided to call for tenders for tlio "Bier Hill" tunnel on the LawrenceRoxburgh railway, and for workers' cottages and huts on the Kawakawa-Grahams-town railway route.
Tenders arc also to be invited for the Mokau River bridge at Kahawera road. On account of the new buildings at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, there was an authorisation of £600.
The erection of a new chapel and workshop at the Invercargill Gaol was approved. The installation of an experimental nlant at the Thames School of Mines, at a cost of £275, was authorised.
, It was decided to call for tenders for cartage work for tho State Coal Department in Wellington for a period of 12 months.
