MR HECTOR SELECTED,

(Pki United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 24. The New Zealand University Senatetook in committee this afternoon the question of the election of a registrar in succession to Mr J, W. Joynt, who resigned last year.

There were nine candidates for the position, and the system of balloting adopted was to pair the men and vote on each pair, the scheme working out similar to a tennis tournament draw. Several ballots were taken, and finally it was annonnced that Mr Barclay Hector, assistant registrar, who has been acting-regis-trar since Mr Joynt resigned, bad been elected to the position.'

Mr Hector, who is a. son of the late Sir James Heolor, has been connected with the university for 16 years. In February, 1899, he was appointed assistant to Mr. J. W. Joynt, registrar, and at the senate meeting of 1904 he was appointed assistant registrar. At the same lime Mr Joynt was granted six months' leave, of absence, and Mr Hector was appointed acting registrar for that period. At the ipecial meeting of the senate in April, 1910, Mr Joynt tendered his resignation, and Mr Hector has been actingregistrar ever since. On many occasions he had acted as registrar for periods varying from Wires weeks to two months, rind all told, he lias actually carried on the business of the unversity almost singlehanded for very nearly two completo

years.
