A -number-of tho members of tho old committee-refused nomination, on the ground that the motion carried was a vote of censure, and as only five persons accepted nomination they were declared duly elected, the acting chairman (Mr o. H. Walker) intimating that the Education Board would no doubt appoint the remainder. It is understood that the refusal of the committee to- allow the placards to be'exhibited was adopted by a small'majority, and that the objections of somo members were not to tho matter contained in the placards, but to the fact thai 'the request came from an outside body.

At the close of the business connected with the election of the Port. Chalmers School Committee last night, members retired jto elect a chairman, and the choice again fell upon Mr J A. M'Lachlan, who, despite protests, was elected to that position for the tenth year in succession—a record of which his colleagues seemed' justly proud.

A Press Association telegram states'that the Taumarunui correspondent of the New Zealand Herald reports that Ngauruhoe 'appeals to be active, great clouds of dark smoke being emitted at intervals from its crater. The meeting of the Benevolent Institulon Committee of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs Talboys (chairman), Walker, Ewing, Myers, and Clark. It was reported that Patrick Cassidy, 75 years of age,'and Habeeb Housh, an Assyrian, 40 years of age, had died during the past week. Sixteen applications for relief were dealt with, among the' applicants being a widow-, previously assisted by the Benevolont Institution Trustees, but lately an inmate of the B/Ock and Pillar Sanatorium: Her children had been committed to the Industrial School, and the woman, who had been discharged from the Sanatorium, had

sought to resume charge of them, but had, according to the"committee's inspector (Mrs Ansell), mnt with somewhat of a rebuilt. The committee assured her that there would be no difficulty in tho matter, and decided to supplement the assistance sfic 'said her relatives were willing to give her. In another case the committee decided that, before assisting a 'woman, to pay for the* services of a lawyer, so that she might proceed against her husband for arrears of maintenance, it must have some assurance as to the likelihood .of the man paying, as in another instance' tho. man had preforred going to gaol to paying up.

At the meeting of the General Committee held yesterday, Crs Tapley, Wilson, and Tapper were appointed to wait upon tho Drainage Board with reference to the question .of the disposal of drainage from tho municipal abattoirs. .

A somewhat costly fire broke out in the engine room of the Kaitangata coal mino early yesterday morning. The building was of briok, with a corrugated iron roof, and it was-damaged to that extent that a portion of tho roof fell ih. A portion of the machinery in the engine room, including the air compressors, , VM a l so much damaged At, first it was thought that the effect of tho fire .vould be an interference with tho, working of the mine, and the consequent enforced idleness of a number of men, but later advices do not confirm this report. The afternoon shift of men went to work as usual, and. it is expected that, while the injury to the air compressors will temporarily prevent operations being continued in the lower levels, the working of, a«l> output from, tho mine will suffer no serious alteration. Mr Robert Lee, managing director of the Kaitangata Coal Company, will be in the township this morning for tho purpose of thoroughly investigating !lv position. Tho whole of tho damage done is fully covered by insurance.

The Napier Borough Council decided last night (says a Press 'Association message) that it was desirable to reject- *he offer of the State-guaranteed Advances Board to advance part of the borough loan, and that tlie whole of the'£134,250 should be borrowed, through the Bank of New Zealand. Four members of the council, including the Mayor, favoured- the acceptance of the board's offer, but six were in favour of accepting the bank's terms. "
