FIRES
(Per United Pkess Association.) NELSON, April's.Shortly after 3 o'clock; this morning a two-storey seven-roomed house in Vanguard street, owned by William Childs and occupied by William Stahloy, soapmaker, was gutted by fire, presumably from the explosion of a kerosene lamp which had been left burning. Very little was saved. The family, who had been absent camping, returned only yesterday. Insurances: House, £100 in the Nev Zealand office; fiirniture and effects, £3<kj in the State office, including £90 on tho manufactured soap.
Yesterday morning a fire was discovered in the old Woodhaugh Hotel. Mr Gunn, a tea blender, occupied the downstuii'6 portion, where.he had a small shop and bedroom, and Mrs Margarot M'Neill lived upstairs. It was Mrs M'Ncill who found that a firo was in progress. This was about 7 o'clock, and she at once aroused Gunn, who managed to extinguish the flames before much damage had been done. Tho origin of the fire is unknown. The building be longs to Mrs Rossbotham.
