NOXIOUS WEEDS.
■—*-- PROSECUTIONS AT NAPIER. (Pes TJhited Ebess Association.) NAPIER, April 4. Soveral defendants in noxious weed prosecutions at. the Magistrate's Court to-day seemed tc feel aggrieved at being haled before the court. The chief objection appeared to be on account of the great difficulty of keeping down the pests in question (Caiiforman thistle). One man put' the case graphically. "It grows," he said, " in most inaccessible places, and no living man could get there. It would takfl wings to do it. I would far rather contract to clear Hawke's Bay of rabbits than to . remove tho thistle from some of these spots." In imposing fines, Mr M'Carthy, S.M., said: " Although it is almost impossible to get rid of the weed, yet there is tho, law, and it must bo complied with. The law prevents spread of the weed to other persons' property." The magistrate added that his experience in Southland showed that very .serious consequences might re- - suit from. Califorhian thistles being al- ' lowed to seed in the beds of creeks.
