Tho master of the Golden. Bed dredge, reporting on last week's operations, stated that everything was working well. The manager of the New Big River mine (Reefton) reports ,thut the battery return' for lust month was 3500z from 3bo tons of ore, and 540z of bullion from the cyanide process,- the estimated total value being £1535. Tho master ,of the South Waikaia dredge reports a very good run for' last week, working for 139 .hours on a face of four chains. ,The depth varied from 23ft to 25ft on a maori bottom., The ground, became poorer towards the back end of the week. The Mastcrton dredge had a good run last wl'ck, the chief stoppage being to allow an examination of tho bottom tumbler. There is less clay in the top skipping, and the layer of blue clay in the second stripping an the cast side of the cut is cutting out in the meantime. The-Mystery. Flat dredge worked about four chains at the eastern end of the face last week for the purpose.of joining the tailings with the solid ground at that point. This portion of the cut has been very poor for some time, but the dredge-

master reports signs of improvement, the ground being much heavier than usual, with better prospects in places. The depth is about 24ft rising to 18ft at tbo eastern end. The secretary of the Nbkomai Hydraulic Sluicing Compay reports. that high reef has been met 'with at the end of the paddock now being worked, in ....No., 1 claim. A well-hole is being sunk, and sluicing will probably be in operation now. A few light showers fell oh tho 27th , ult., otherwise the weather .has" been dry and warm, for this'timo of year. No.' 2"'has made full time,- and good progress lias been made. Thanks to the Lion race Nos. 1 and 2 have been able to work almost continuously during the,week. Tho ground continues tight and stony. Here, as in No. 2, high reef has been met with along the westera face. No 3 has' not been able to work, owing to the Lion raco water being diverted to Nos. 1 and 2.

The Transvaal gold mines milled 21,004,618 tons of paydirt during 1909 for a total yield of 7.280,542 line ounces of gold, valued at £30,925,788. The average value per ton works out at 6.Bsdwt, or 29s Id per ton. The average working costs were 17s 3d per ton, an<l the averago working profits lis 7d per ton. Tho total working profits of the companies interested amounted lo £12,074,302, and the dividends paid during the year amounted to £9,504,621. The Southland Times reports that good progress has been made with the erection of buildings ami plant at the Tarawera Company's claim at, Preservation Inlet. No development work has yet been done, but everything is now ready for the final stage of the work, and it is expected thai the result of tho first smelting will bo available in about a month's time.' Reports from (he Morning Star mine are also of an encouraging. nature. It is expected that the lino to the battery will bo completed this month, alrid the battery itself is now ready for crushing. '

. DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE.' The sharemarket was briskci yesterday than it has been for some time past and-a good many stocks changed hands during the day. Sales on 'Change included one'parcel of Waihi shares at £9 6d, and two of Waihi Grand Junctions at 31s and.3ls 3d respectively. The bulk of the sales recorded were to outside buyers, and those reported included two of Old Haurakis at 3s Bd, and one of Waihi Grand Junctions at 31s, and .there were two sales of the ; latter stock at 32s 6d and 32s 9d, for delivery in eight weeks. Westport Coal shares found an outside sale at £6 ss, and there were two ; saks of National Insurance (.hares at 28s 9d, and one of Central Churlfcons at 2s 3d.
