TREATMENT OF IMMIGRANTS

THE AUSTRALIAN CONTROVERSY. LAND-OWNERS DEFENDED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, April 4. Mr Coghlan (Agent-general for New South Wales), writing to The Times, says that some Australian employers in the back-blocks are averse to married couples with children, not because they are heartless or unfeeling, but because they prefer the children to remain in thickly-popu-lated! areas, where they 'are able to obtain doctors, nursing, and schooling. The controversy has arisen because certain emigration committees in England are sending out unemployed mechanics and labourers with families, and this is entirely contrary to the State Government's policy. They expect a man to send for his family after ho has established himself.
