SERIOUS CHARGES.

AN ARMED AND MASKED YOUTH.

A youth slated to bo 15£ years old was brought before Mr Witkloivfion, S.M., sitting in the Juvenile Court yesterday) charged with- breaking into the promises of. l-tobert Robertson, at Milton, betwfion the 19th and. 2lst inst, and stealing therefrom 153' in cash, Some cigarettes and matches, valued in all at 265. ■

Chief Detective Herbert e&id that tllcro ■ were, other serious charges that would ba brought against tho accused, including a second chargo of breaking into'Mr Robertson s bookseller's shop and stealing goods Ito tho value of £1 10s 6d. The abused would bo- also elinrgcd • with stealing a horse, saddle, and bridle, valued at £10 and with breaking into the premises' of John Reid, Milton, and stealing, cigarcttcs to the vtiluo of 10s 6d. He would further bo charged with an attempt to. steal £7 from Miss Brownlie Inst Saturday afternoon. It was alleged'that the yoimn- ladv 'was walking along tlio'Southbridgo° road alone about 11 a.m., 'when she felt a pull at lior handbag, which contained £7 in' cash. The attempt was made by a young man with a music over his face. When demanding her bag lie presented a revolver at her, but as sho' resisted and screamed the assailant rail away. In the afternoon of the same day a resident named William Graham saw the accused, and, judging him to bo Miss Brownlie's assailant, gave chase raptured himami handed .tho lad over to Detective Mitchell, who was on his tracks • When arrested the boy- admitted 'tlio offences named, and told the/police lvlioro the stolen horse and other property were. He said it had been his intention-to ridd to Mataura,whew ho had beenemployed beforo tlio Christinas- holidays. Tlio 'revolver found on him was fully loaded, and o also carried -a largo sheath-knife - ABcused was remanded till tho -31st inst. bail being, fixed at £50 for himself and; two sureties of £2o each.
