RIFLE SHOOTING.

' 'THE TRENTIIAM MEETING. (Pkr United Pkess'Associatiom.) ■ TRENTHAM, Match 7. It would be hard to find a more trying day for shooting than to-day. Tho 'irei°tham range was at its very worst. Tricky is but a mild Uertii for the vagaries of the wind and the light that made up the day. To the spectators, of whom there were a number, the range never looked better. The'sun shone with a brilliant radiance, the heat beins tempered by a refreshing breeze, but all these things were fatal to good shooting. ■. Mirage, tricky wind, kaleidoscopic light, and, in fact, all the weather vagaries .except rain were joined together to upset the equilibrium of tho shootist. The result of this was poor scoring. Shooting started at 9.45 with the 600 yards of the Wellington Match and 900 I yards of the Otago Match, both matches having been left half completed on Saturday. At 600 yards the highest score was 49 but Ayson (Alurihiku) and Grant (Taradale) succeeded in scoring possibles at 900 yards. There were, howeve'r, at each of these ranges a. number 'of 49's.' Fisher, the winner of the Wellington Match, put on 49 at 600 .yards, and thus beat Parslow, Biker, and James on the count. In the 900 yards F. Moycs (Denniston) won with •In the .afternoon the weather became mora uncertain, and the result was much more, unreliable scoring. This was especially the case with regard to the Australians none of whom seemed able to grasp the tricks of the range. At the close of the Wellington Match Frank (Nelson) was still leading in. the aggregate, but the 900 yards was fatal to his chance,' and when tho Utago Match was completed Marshall (Karon),, at one time one of tho most reliable short range shots in New Zealand was leading, .with King' (Christchurch) close n Tl Ji, aftei ; n °on's shooting consisted of the 900 yards of the' Canterbury and the bUO yards of the Auckland Matches. Shoot'n?> H! M J& ir, y , fast > t)es ' ,it « the conditions, and the 900 yards saw the downfall of many shooting reputations. Several of the competitors failed at this range to hit the target at all, while several.others only got into single figures. There- were no possibles scored the best totals being Dodd (Weihngton), Kennedy Smith (Kaitanjrata), and Piggott (Australia), 49. Kefford (Australia) and ex-champion Ching wore among the 48 s, wi 1, 47 s as thick as blaokberriel. In tho Auckland Match, 600.yards, there were again no possibles, and only a couple of 495-VIZ., Piggott and, Kennedy. . Interest always centres in the shooting by tho champion, but this year Duncan, who won he Belt in 1909, has shot, with the hardest '«<*, and at nresent it looks 86 though his chance of repeating his. last. vear's success was very remote.
