On the motion of Cr Tait it was agreed to consider the items soriatum. , . Cr Gibb explained that the recommendation of the Works Committee, that Btep? bo taken to reorganise the works v as made because it was felt that some change was necessary owing to the manner in which works were carried out and tho cost Personally ho thought a clean sweep was I necessary so that reorganisation could bo Get about. > Cr Crawford moved, when the item < town clerk, £200" was reached, "That t the town clerk, cadet, inspector, sexton, and forester be included in the recommendation of the Works Committee. A town clerk and inspector combined could be obtained for a less sum than tho combined total of both officers, and better value would result from combining both offices The cadet was worth more money than was being paid. Cr Cable seconded the motion, which, after discussion, was withdrawn, and tho following substituted: "That the item 'town clerk, £200' bo reduced by £1, as an indication that the offices of town clerk and inspector should bo combined" Cr Aslier disapproved of the motion Cr Tait thought it would bo better to allow the item to pass as submitted in tho estimates, and afterwards appoint a committee to consider and report 'upon reorganisation. Some reason had to be i shown for striking a rate, and fho estimates could first be passed and detailed items of expenditure could afterwards bo > dealt with if thought necessary. On being put, the motion was carried by six votes to three, thoso voting in > favour ; being; Cre Sutton, M'Kinnon, Stevenson, Gibb, Mitcholl, Crawford, and thoso against, Crs Asher, Tait, and Maw-

Cr Gibb moved that the item "sexton, £75" bo struck out, as an indication that the position of forester and sctton should bo combined.—Cra Tait and Slaw son spoko against tho motion, and Cr Cable in favour, and on a division, tho \oting being equal, the Mayor, gave his casting; \ote in , favour of tho item as submitted

The item'"band, £20," was also opposed, and Cr Gibb moved that it be struck out, giving as reasons that the band did riot give its services' as freely as it might to desirable objects. ' Cr Asher pointed out that the item last year was £30, and had boen reduced £10 by the committee for the reasons given by Cr Gibb. The item was retained o;i the casting vote of tho Mayor. Cr. Gibb moved "that the ltom 'forester, £138,' bo reduced by £1." Tho item was retained on tho casting vote of the Major. Tho estimates were then adopted as amended, and the- U6ual notice was given to strike a ratn of Is 3d in the £1. GENERAL.
