CHRISTCHURCH, March 7. The case of a street preacher who was before the court on Saturday has created general indignation. The preacher has paid the costs, and so scaped a month's imprisonment, _ but the authorities are being hotly criticised for taking proceedings against/ a stranger and permitting the Salvation Army and similar local organisations to occupy Cathedral square night after night. The subject of mixed bathing has been warmly discussed in the Cbristchurch newspapers during the past week. The matter was raised by a request made by Mr Ell,' M.P., to the Minister of 'Marine that he should make regulations governing bathing on New Brighton Beach, his suggestion being that if women wanted to bathe by themselves they should be given the opportunity.
