LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
(Abridgjed ' from Press Association Telegram.) MONDAY, DECEMBER G. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. MAJOR MAIR'S PETITION. The Hon. Mr JENKINSON moved that the Council agree to the following icpurt o( .the Public Petitions Committee on the petition of William Gilbert .Vlair" The committee, having considered the petition and taken evidence thereon, is unanimously of opinion that the many important services rendered by the petitioner to the country, and particularly the distinguished part borne by Jiim in . the Waikato war, entitle him to the favourable consideration of the Government." The mover referred at length to the services rendered to the public by the petitioner during nearly half a century in tlw Maori war, as magistrate, and in other'capacities. The Hon. Sir GEORGE M'LEAN said that from his own knowledge of the scrvicee which Major Mair had rendered he was deserving of all the consideration the State could give him. The Hon. Mr BEEHAN said he thought the report might have been made itronger. . After considerable discussion, mainly favourable to tho motion, the ATTOR-NEY-GENERAL said he would impress on his colleagues any resolution which the Council might nass on the subject. The motion was carried, and the Council then adjourned.
