HOSPITAL SATURDAY

ANOTHER GREAT EFFORT

£1000 SECURED

ANLNONDATIUXOIM'LVNIES

When all returns are complete it will probably be found that tho total amount collected this year of behalf of the Dunedin Hospital and a number of charitable institutions is from £150 to £200 short of what it was in 1908 —£1294. But it is not tor one moment to be assumed that this is in any way a reflection upon tho work doiu by the Hospital Saturday Association. The members of tho latter worked as hard as, if not harder than, ever before, their organisation was «s thorough, and their largo band of collectors comprised, ;"> usual, Sadies who were determined, for one day, to prove themselves tho most expert beggars in the world. And the weather, if marred by a. wind that carried dust, heat, ami unpleasantness, was littlo short of the best that cou'.d he desired. Under the circumstances, the collectors are to be heartily congratulated on their achievement in securing so Javgo. a sum of money, for it is considerably more than any of I lit 1905, 1906, and the 1907 collections. The 19C8 collection was phenomenal, and it is therefore hardly fair to institute a comparison between it and Saturday's total. Further, let it bo said that tho members of the executive arc more than satisfied '.vith the 1909 collection; it was generally recognised that there was hss money abroad, and not quite tho saute amount of enthusiasm in tho country, and it is unlikely That oven the most optimistic collector expected to reach or better tho record sum secured a year

As a matter of fact, the collectors actuallyreceived more coins, but tho coins were of loss value than formerly. Tho average Dunc(}'in citizen, a Scotchman and it cautious person, and having already experienced the storm and stress of four Hospital Saturdays, had developed a somewhat remarkable degree of cunning. Ho had quite made up his mind to tho fact that ho must give in a worthy cause, and, after due considoratioiii ho had doubtless decided upon the amount that he would B'iiv; .but he remembered that in previous years ho had, more often than not, found himself headed off .in every direction by cool, determined collectors, and riot been granted release until he had produced and given away a coin. So the fivo shillings formerly decided on had grown into ten, and tho helplessness and desperation of their late owner had grown accordingly. " Expcrientia docet"—and on Friday afternoon and Saturday tho fivo shillings were chained into pennies, and during Saturday tiheir owner was able to go jauntily past sixty collectors, hearing, with the pleasant vsonsation of the man who is happy and charitable, their grateful thanks as they rattled his ponnies in their boxes. And that explains how no less than 33,161 pennies were given a.wjy on Saturday, and why, if tho spcoie actually -oeoived vas more, tho total was less.

Littlo knots of collectors wore stationed at every street corner between Knox Church and tho tramsheds, and any man who recklessly attempted to walk that distance generally ended by skulking down back streets, and finding a quiet corner where ho might have time to think and count up his losses. The network was thorough. Every corner of tho town was .guarded, and no ono could escape the meshes. The ladies, in some instance.?, were on duty at T a.m., and every man who entered tho city after that time had to run the gauntlet. Most men gave up their cash with good ."race, but there were others who attempted to outwit tho charitable medioants, and thcro were in consequence afow amusing incidents. Ono resourceful individual, for instance, followed a kind of zig-zag course along tho main street, contriving to always pass tho strongly garrisoned corners in the middle of the road. But his ruso was won detected, and he had to confess to ignominious failure. Hurrying cyclists with bent heads and a faraway look on their faces, met the same fate. Smiling, insistent, ladies took their stand right in front of the bicycles, and tho helpless riders gave up thoir coins with the best possible grace. The collectors were present in strong forco in Customhouse square, and (he battle •raged there all day. There was a picket at every street corner, and patrols of vigorous, good-looking young ladies wero out in all directions. In parentheses, it may bo observed that-the executive puts a considerable commercial value or a pretty girl. An official told a reporter on Saturday that a young lady whose appearance is in her favour can often succeed in taking money from tho impressionable variety of youthful male when the most determined a.nd experienced collector has failed. Her nativity on Saturday was surprising—only second, indeed, to her success in gettin" coins into the boxes. Nothing daunted her. Two men, seeing her approach, and hearing the suggestive rattle of her box, bolted for tho friendly shelter of an hotel door. Relentless as fate She followed; the harried males bought release, and went on inside. But there was no pence there. Another lady, equally cool and equally determined, waited with a box, and she. too, had to be bought oft'. A party of campers, bound for °tho green hills around Warrington, came slowly into tho square in a motor car, bclieviin," themselves se?ure. Vain hope! A patrol, irresistible individually, and, collectively Exceptionally active, swept out of its lair at tho Stock Exchange! surrounded the car, and soon had ransom tinkling into its boxes.

THE COINS RECEIVED. _"I guess we've about cornered the Rupplv of small change in Dunodin," said a tired bank clerk about midnight on Saturday, when ho saw the list of coins that had been received. There was reason in theremark, for no less than 33,000 pennies had parsed into the bank during tho day and evening. Altogether, 62,256 notre or coins were received—or, on. an average, mora than one each from every man, woman, and child in tho City of Dunodin. An .analysis of the following table will show that the public- favours tho small coin as a. medium of charity, as against the coin of a larger denomination. All coins of a value of six- •' pence and over show a surprising decrease in numbers, while threepences, pennies, and halfpence show an equally remarkable increffse :— 1909. 1908. Tho amount, oollcclod in 1905 was £700; in 1906. £848; in 1907, £720; in 1908, £1294.
