(I'er United Pkess Association)

CHRISTCHURCH, November 19. i At a general meeting of the Cantcruury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, held on Wednesday, the following resolution was carried :—" That this meeting regrets that artisans and others are being dismissed from the Government workshops, thereby causing a largo amount of valuable machinery to be practically idle, while, at the same time, work ' which would employ both tho machinery and the employees whose services have been dispensed with has been let to private firms. This meeting considers that tho members, of Parliament for Canterbury should urge upon the Government the necessity of putting work in hand which would provide employment 'for those being discharged."

Ihere is still (says the Lyttelton limes) a great deal of feeling amon«sl employees at the Addington Workshops in regard to the large number 'of dismissal.-; that have been made■ lately and dissatisfaction is ■ expressed with the replies given by the Minister of Railways to 'questions ashed in Parliament by Messrs Taylor and Witlv _ u [& tinted that 13 labourers, three turners one blacksmith, and one striker will be sent away next week. It is felt that the Government ought to build at Add melon the 10 engines which it is proposed to givj to Messrs Price Brothers at Thames.
