It is claimed for. the Christmas number of the Graphic, the receipt of which we lulmow ledge, that it is particularly strong this year in humorous subjects. The claim is ouo that may ho thoroughly well substantiated. The illustrations, which have been executed in colour throughout, appeal forcibly to the senso of humour, and are an admiral)!? feature of a capital production, that includes also several well-told stories. With the number are given away two reproductions in colours, " The Storming of Dargai Heights," by K. Calon Woodvillo, and "For Ever and Ever, Amen," from the Awmody picture by Mrs Seymour Lucas. Exceedingly effective is (ho Australasian pictorial annual, the Southern Sphere—a Christmas publication,—edited this year, we observe, by a quondam New Zealand journalist ill the person of Mr J. Gratlaii. Grey. The nim of the Sphere is expressed to he to portray the cxirting conditions of Australia by the presentation of indisputable data and by tho liberal employment of photographic and pictorial art to dcmouslrale the actual I singe of advancement that has been ioaciicd in tki Common wealth. This object is achieved partly by the citation of figures that are indicative of the growth of Australia and partly by ills reproduction of photographs which, so far as they go, are splendidly illustrative and highly artistic. The Sphere include? a lew stories, ts well, and articles by competent aiithoritit-3 en literature, the stage, music, and art in Australia. It represents, on the whole, excellent valuo for the price that is charged for it. The November Windsor llr-gHiiiiio, a copy of which we have received from Messrs Stark «nd Co., contains a long story w.imhtc in (no one issue by Justus Miles Fcrman superbly illustrated bv Frank Crai« in addi- ! tier, to ,i large instalment of Max Pemberton's picturesque new serial, "White Walls" and complete stories by Barry Pain, Harrison lihcdes. G. 1!. Lancaster, and oilier masters oi the short story. Charles G. D. Koboits contributes his latest pro-e-poeni of wild iife' and the third article in (lie series on the "Inland Navigation of Ureal llrilain" deals with questions of traffic and traction. An article on the Birmineham Festival tells the long and interesting history et that institution with a wealth ot anecdotes and many excellent portraits; ami the fine art feature of the number consists of au appreciation of the- work of Mr J. I'ouag I Huntci, accompanied by lo admirable rcnro°ductions ,'roni his pictures, including" a special plait of tho one purchased for the nation under the tcrui3 of the Chaulrey Be-" quest. The whole number is finely illustrated by such leading black-and-white artists as Maurice Greiffenbagen, C,, Raven-Hid, Dudley Hardy, Frank Crag,. Cyrus Cuneo, William HaUiorell, ami Fred Pegram.
