HIGH STREET SCHOOL BAZAAR

With (lie object of further' augmenting tho funds at the disposal of the committee for the erection of swimming baths for the school a bazaar was opened yesterday afternoon in the High Street School Gymnasium. The opening ceremony was informed by his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. H. Walker), at th» request of the chairman of the committee (Mr D. Wishart). Other members of the committee present were Messrs Swing and Keast. In catting upon the Mayor, Mr Wishart said all would agree that Mr Walker was tho right man to open the bazaar, both baoauso of his official position and because ho had for many years been a member of the School Committee, and had in that capacity taken a prominent part in the work (towards the establishment of tho swimming; baths, assisting personally in a very tangible way. It might bo asked, Mr Wishart continued, why tho residents of that district should concern themselves with tho establishment of swimming baths. The only answer thas he could suggest would te that neither the Government nor any individual was likely to do so, and therefore it behoved them to do tho work themselves, as there was very good reason why boys and girls should learn how to swim. lie could say that to the swimming bath proposals both rich and poor aliko in tho district had responded very goncrously, and he had to thank them, on behalf of the committee, vory much indeed for their kindness. '

Mr Walksr, in declaring tho bazaar op-sn, expressed tho very great pleasure ho had in being present in his dual capacity. Tlio committee r.t presant had in hand a. certain sum towards the erection of the baths, a«d they hoped this amount would be vory largely increased by tho present bazaar. Witli rafcronco lo ftie establishment of swimming baths by the City Council, ho said he hoped their erection would be proceeded with in the near future in the centre of tho city. In the meantime, tho committee, recognising it was its duty to provide for the physical as well as the mental needs of the children, had decided to take tin's matter in hand. It had approached tho Education Board for a grant, but that body could not comply with the request, although ho believed had it been in its power it would havo done so. In conclusion, the speaker heartily thanked all the ladies who had worked so hard in preparation for the bazaar, and said all that was needed to crown their efforts was the patronage of tho local residents.
