PRESS CABLE SERVICE
CONTINUATION OP THE INQUIRY. Pt«33 Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 17. Before the Cable Inquiry Committee Mr Mahon, a, member of the House of Rcprtesnt-alives, and at one time the owner of the Mensies Miner, of Western Australia, denied the statement made by Senator Best implying that he had pirated cables. H8 had received a eelection iii return for supplying tho West Australian papers with local news. The Cable Association fixed tJjs contribution at £159 a year for a little town like Meaizies, while Bendigo only paid £200. The Cable Association was the worst monopoly in. Australia. At present the other newspapers had no chance against the combine, as no two agreements terminated at the same date.
The manager of the Melbourne Herald declined to state what he paid for the service. If, however, another evening paper in Melbourne got the same service his advice would be to terminate the arrangement and get an independent service.
Senator Dobson said: But tho Argus and Age are separate concerns, and vet they take the same service.
Tho witness said that was thoir policy, but lie did not agree with it.
