BOY SCOUTS.
Oil Saturday afternoon the North Dunedin Battalion to the number of 70 paraded on the Queen's drive under Chief Scoutmaster Carr, with Scoutmaster Rushbridgo in charge of No. 1 troop and Acting- Scoutmaster Ca.rr in charge of No. 2. A very interesting contest was arranged between the two troops, one half being told off to defend a small bush-covered hill, while the other troop was detailed to attack the hill, and if possible take it. The defending party won the contest.
Tho weekly meeting of iJie Roslyn and Maori Hill troops, hold on Friday in Mr Washer's hi|ll, was attended by 61 boys. The first troop was instructed in signalling and knotting under the leaders, the second troop bejng instructed in Morse and semaphore signalling under the Hag instructor (Mr O'Conn-el). On Saturday the scouts assembled at Maori Hill, and engaged in manoeuvres' at Roy's Gully. Tho patrols were instructed in hut-building, care being taken that, only elder and broom trees were cut down.
The South Dunedin Boy Scouts, under Chief Scoutmaster C'alder, held the weekly parade on Saturday afternoon. Tho lotal on parade was 54, including the two scoutmasters. . They were marched down to watch the launching of the new twin-screw ferry boat Waikana.
Tho North-East Valley Scouts had a very successful clay's scouting /im conjunction with the Central Dunedin flivision, working in and about the Leith Valley under Scoutmaster Arthur.
The. Central troop is experiencing a reaction in iis work owing to one or two scouis breaking their oaths in various ways, but Chief Scoutmaster Fergusson hopes eventually to make this division a success. The troop was put through some fine work last Wednesday and Saturday. Scoutmaster Phair is ably assisting the cause here. The Anderson's Bay troop has decided to aim at a large increase in numbers, and Scoutmaster Grainger intends to make this troop one to bo envied. The drill and scouting work so far has shown a vast improvement.
The Port Chalmers troop to tJis number of 60, under tlio organising officer and Sooutmaster Phaii, is cnthusinstie, only two being absent, from the weekly meeting, when Mr Godfrey and Mr Donald assisted in giving instruction in knots, etc. The boys were also put through signalling and drill, and on Saturday 55 scouts met at Mussel Bay and. marelied to St. Leonards, where the main body was fent. Here attention was concentrated on the capture of despatch runners, after which a return was made to the Port.
