CARTERS' DISPUTE.

AMICABLE SETTLEMENT SECURED. Tho industrial dispute between tho Dunedin and Suburban Industrial Union of Workers and tho Dunedin and.Suburban General Carriers and Coal Merchants' Industrial Union of Employers was again before Mr J. R. Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner, yesterday morning nt the LawCourts. As oil tho previous day, Messrs J. Clifford .(president), J. Haymes (secretary!, and W. Richardson represented tho workers, and Messrs M. Stevenson, Spencor, and Macfio tho employers, and Mr Owen was also present on behalf of the NewZealand Express. Company. '

Discussion on tho various clauses, it was hoped, would be concluded before midday, bat the conferenco lasted practically all day. As a result, however, of the deliberations of the delegates, and the careful and tactful chairmanship of Mr Triggs, an agreement satisfactory to all parties to the dispute was arrived at, and the terms of tbiß agreement will be embodied in tho 'recommendation which the Conciliation Commissioner will make to the Arbitration Court in connection with the framing of a new award. Mr Triggs is to be complimented on the manner in which he has effected a settlement of a dispute which, by its nature, did not by any means lend itself readily to arbitration.

The following is the remainder of tho agreement arrived at between the parties. (Tile fii'st portion, of the agreement appeared in yesterday's issue.):— Hour 3of Labour.—A week's work shall be 47| hours, exclusive of the time required for the necessary attendance to horses. Tho working hours shall be regulated' by the employer according to the special requirements and circumstanccs of each trade or business, but so that the ordinary hours of work other than attendance to horses shall be made to fall between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. All time worked before and alter those hours sliaJ!, in computing the hours worked during tho week, be counted as hours worked beyond the prescribed 47j hours. Any dispute as to questions or matters arising under this clause shall be settled under tho provisions of olause. 16 hereof. An hour shall, if feasible, be allowed for dinner.

Overtime,—Overtime shall be paid' at tho rate of Is 3d per hour for all time worked beyond tho prescribed 47£ hours; any worker called out after 10.30 p.m. shall be l>aicl Is 6d per hour up till 6 a.m, on the following morning, the minimum amount paid to such worker shall not be less than Js. For work done on Sundays, Christmas Day, or Good Friday, other tlmn attendance to horses, drivers shall bo paid at tho rate of 2s 3d per hour. For work other than attendance to horses done on any of the other holidays mentioned in this award drivers shall be paid at the rate of Is 3d per hour. The above payments shall bo in addition to the weekly wages. Preference.—So long as the -ules of the union permit any person of good character and sober habits and a competent driver to become a member on payment of an entrance fee not exceeding ss, upon his written application, without ballot or other election, and so to continue upon contributing subscriptions not exceeding 6d l>er week, the employers shall employ members of the union in preference to noninembers, provided that there aro members equally qualified to perform tlio particular work required to bo done. Nothing in this clause shall apply to casual drivers. Tho union shall keep an Employment Book at the Trades Hall, Dunedin, particulars of which shall be advertised in the Otago Daily Times and Evening Star.

Payment of Wages.—All, including overtime, shall be paid weekly, on a day to be from time to time fixed in advance by the employer.

Terms of Engagement.—ln the case of men other than casual hands a week's notice of dismissal or of resignation shall bo given by tho employer or employee, but this shall not prevent the employer from dismissing any employee for gcod cause. Boarding—An employer may enter into an agreement with the driver to provido hiin with suitable board and lodging, and to deduct the price thereof from his wages at a rate not exceeding 15s per week. Drivers Attending Trains and Boats and Suburban Parcels Delivery.—ln the case of a man required to attend early and late trains, steamers, and suburban parcels deliveries, the hours of employment ehali be 57 hours a week, and tho minimum weekly wages shall bo as follows:—For drivers attending one horse when a stableman is employed, £2 se; for drivers attending two horses where a 6tableinan is employed, £2 8s; for drivers attending one bores where no stableman is employed, £2 6s; for drivers attending two horses where no stableman is employed, £2 9s. And the previous hereinbefore contained provisions aa to Sundays and holidays and hours of labour shall not apply. And in the cass of youths similarly employed, tlio following provisions shall apply—Employers to be .at liberty to employ one youth to each completo four such drivers, minimum wages to be:—From 18 to 20 years, £1 10s; from 20 to 21" years, £l 15s; over 21 years, full wages,

Matters Not Provided For.—Should any matter arise during the currency of this award which has not been provided for, euch matter or dispute shall' be submitted to the president and secretary of Employers' Association, and the chairman and sacrf/ary of the Workers' Union, and in default of agreement between them, then by the Inspector of Factories.

Scope of Award.—This award shall apply to employers carrving on business within a radius of 25 miles from the Chief Pcsfc Office in the City of Dunedin.

Terms of Award.—This award shall come into operation on the Ist day of January. 1910. and shall continue in operation until the 31st day of December, 1911. and thereafter shall remain in force until superseded by another award or an industrial agreement. 1
