CARRIAGE OF MAILS.
AN AUCKLAND GRIEVANCE. (Peii United Press Association.) { AUCKLAND, July 19. Tlie mercantile community in Auckland lias beer pjit to much inconvenience by the action of tins Sydney postal authorities in forwarding a late English mail via Newcastle by the cargo steamer Wnitemata to Wellington. ihe president of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr Kent), oil being seen on the matter, said that for the future it would certainly be in the direction of assisting the commercial community if all mails from Australia to New Zealand were forwarded to Auckland, and not via anywhere else. The inconvenience to Auckland merchants and business people arising out of the present contretemps was dwelt upon by Mi* Kent-, who characterised it as quite serious. Other commercial men who were interviewed agreed that the intention of the ' post office authorities on this occasion might have been all right, but there was a general consensus of opinion, nevertheless, that in future mails should come by the direct Sydney-Auckland boat. In all cases where the alternative miMit happen to be a cargo steamer, as to the tirrival of which in Wellington by a given date there could, be no definite reliance.
