She lias visited Auckland on several former occasions, and is used by the German Governiiionl as a patrol ship among (lie Eastern Pocilic Islands. She saluted the port on arrival,by firing 25 suns, and the courtesy was returned from the shoro battery. According to a cable from London, timed July 11, the New Zealand Shippim' Company's steamer Whakalana had about 601! tons of her cargo damaged so badly as to bo unlit for ro-shinment. The balance of_ her cargo is being forwarded bv the \\ innate, sailing on Wednesday next. lho Victoria arrived at. Dunedin about noon yesterday from Sydney, via Auckland. She left Sydney on July 7, and arrived at Auckland on July 11, and sailed on lho 13th for Dunedin, calling at the usual Kast Coast, ports en route. She had a moderate southerly gale and beam ton to .Auckland, and fine weather and variable winds down the coast. The Victoria sails again to-morrow afternoon on the return trip. At a recent meeting of the Melbourne Harbour Trust it was resolved-" That, to enable tho port of Melbourne to maintain and increase its commercial and industrial prestige, a dry dock of sufficient dimensions to accommodate tho largest oversea steamers trading to Port Phillip is an urgent necessity." Tho mover (Commissioner Liston) stated that since the conntructron of tho Alfred Graving Deck at Williamstown in 1874 no further provision «[ this kind in tho interests of shipping ,hatl teen carried out. There were nineteen largo oversea vessels regularly trading to that port, which, if accidents betel them in tho vicinity of Port Phillip, would be unable to be docked at Melbourne for repairs. A great deal ot money which should have been kept in Victoria, had been spent in Sydney, sitnnly becaupe shipbuilding firms there" had the advantage of being alongside docks of amnio size. Owiug to the railway lino having provided Cheviot with a handy means of transport and communication with the business centres, (ho old landing service at Port Robinson has gone out of commission. It has boon offered by tho Government for competition by tender, and the tenders closed yesterday. Tho old plant, which presumably contained a large quantity of useful timber and machinery, represented a pioneering effort, in tho lino of harbour business. It was first -put up by the late Hon. W. Robinson, then owner of Cheviot Estate. The Government tool; it over in 1893. enlarged the buildings considerably, and o]>crated the service for fivo years. The place was then handed over to; the Cheviot County Council. The completion of tho railway line into the, estate has superannuated the landing service: While the steamer Holmdale was discharging hardwood at [Westport recently the wharf labourers engaged objected to a new foreman being appointed, and refused (o work under him. Captain Clerk, master of the vcEsel. thereupon decided lo proceed with the work with his own crew, and discharged a good part, of tho cargo by this means. Next morning the executive of the Wharf Labourers' Union held a meeting, and eventually the ship's agents were approached, with the result that the wharf labourers took up the work again under the control ot Captain Clark and his officers.
