During t!ie past week 223 .unemployed men have registered their names at "the Auckland office of [lie Labour Department, 75 being married (with 260 persons dependent upon them) and 148 being single. The number is less than during some previous weeks, when as many as 300 signed llio bool;. During last woe'k 37 men were sent, to work by the department, 20 being despatched to the Gisborne railway works, wlliU 17 were sent to private' employment CHRISTCIIURCH, July 17. There are many indications that the present congested condition of labour must be speedily relieved. A number of private employers are coming forward offering casual work, and tli-s offers are being readily accepted. The Chriskhurch Hospital yesterday signed a contract for the erection of buildings to cost £13,000. and as tlio foundations will be put in hand immediately, a good deal of labour will be absorbed. Many other building contracts are let, and it seems that the lone; lane has been reached, turning for Ihe benefit of a majority of the unemployed. This morning the Mayor received the following increase from the Hon.,!. Carroll, Acting Prime Minister, in reply to an inquiry relative to granting of Government subsidies on relief funds raised for the unemployed:—" The Uovcnimc-nt is not contributing to any municipal work, cither in Wellington or elsewhere. Private subscriptions are subsidised. only where the expenditure is on national work approved." (From Oub Own Correspondent.) I-WERCARGILL, Julv 18. The unemployed trouble is being slightly felt in Invcrcargill, and at its last meeting t-lio Borough Council authorised the Mayor to find casual municipal employment, for out of work residents to the number of 12, those taken on to be men who had resided for some time ,in the town, and married men to have preference.' In commenting on tho matter, the llavor mentioned that the Government Labour officer had about 80 names on his register of unemployed, about hal f of the men being married, Writing in tho ITawke's Kay Herald, a w r 'i ol i'i si! ? nl ' n ff hin:sclf "Not. Out of Work," gives utterance to these sentiments:—" I never, when out of work, ac-uopt.-d assistance (or charity) from the union or any parson, and that notwithstanding the fact that my family is larger than that of another corresuondent. Our membership card has printed on its face the motto, 0 Justice, industry, friendship; associated to protect our rights, not to infringe upon those of other.?.' By acting up to the motto of our association, being economical with the assistance of my wife" and not allowing the 'cutter to be run' to our home, or encouraging the use of intoxicants in anyshapo or form, I have never found it necessary to impose on the grocer, the baker, or the butcher—all necessaries being paid for on delivery. In every instance I have- received tho utmost kiudness from my employers, -mid if employees would do as I have dono they would not require to rely on any union. Wo live in one of tho finest countries on God's earth, 'tho working man's paradise,! and if wo would only be. more considerate for the man who has to find -tho cash, more economical, and less selfish, wo would Vie bappior, better olf financially, and justor."
