WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY.
IN CONFLICT WITH THE CITY COUNCIL. (Per Unites Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, July 17. The negotiations between tho City Council and the Gas, Company for the'sale to the company for a term of years of the right to bring gas mains from Mirj.mar through the city streets havo readied a stagrt where the council demands payment of £EOO per annum for the privilege, and the company offer £250. Matters are now complicated through an attempt by the | company to secure the issue of an Order-in-Council authorising the work under a private bill of 1908, which was believed to safeguard,the council's rights in such cases as this. Tlio proviso was inserted by arrangement betw«u Sir J. G. Waid" mid Mr Hislop, the late Mayor, and it was then understood that no order should ever be issued while any negotiations were incomplete. Mr Carroll, Acting Prime Minister, however, has said he will not delay the issue of the order later than Monday, unless stronger reasons are submitted tlin-n any given so far.) The town clerk has fovwarded a long arid stronglywritten letter stating the council's position and views. The issue >s being eagerly awaited.
