A SELWYN REMINISCENCE.
(From Our Owk Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, Mav 19. The centenary of the birth of tlio late Bishop- Selwyn will be further celebrated under the auspices of the Diocese of Auckland in the Choral Hall to-morrow evening. 'The l'u'shop of Auckland will preside, and the speakers will include his Excellency the Governor, tlio Hon. ])r Findlsy (Attorney-general), and a number of others. The (tapers are full of .Selwyn stories, of which tlio following, from a Mauku nun's vemitriecences, is characteristic: — On the occasion of one of his visits to the district, he was riding from the Lower Karaka at. night on a' bad road, not much more titan a track. He, had been paying some visits and he got off the road. After a vain endeavour to find the path again, he came across a deserted homestead, but only a large sod chimney wiis left standing. After tethoiing his horse, he made himself as comfortable as he could in the fireplace, with his saddle for a pillow, the three sides of the chimney Bhelteriirg him from the wind. On davlight coining, he saddled up again, aiid haying foiimt the track, he soon armed at, hospitable quarters at Mauku, where he told us how he had spent the night in such a novel bedroonj, • " -
