CONFERENCE OF DELEGATES. (Per United Press Association.) TIMARU, February 12. A conference of delegates representing the Wellington, Auckland, Canterbury, South Canterbury, and Hawke's Bay Centres of tho Amateur Swimming Association was held lust evening. Mr George Harris, president of the council, was nominated to the chair, lie said that ho must decline to attend tho nicotinjr m any other capacity than that of chairman, and, as he considered (be conference a very improper one when a controlling authority was already in existence, he could not associate himself with it, and retired. Mr Ludwig (president of Ihe Wellington Centre) was thereupon voted to the chair. Ho pointed out that it was not at all unusual for delegates of bodies affiliated to one association to meet in conference apart from the parent association. A long discussion took place in regard io (he mothod of allocating tho Government grant of £200, dissatisfaction being expressed with the present system of apportioning £100 to lninmno work and £100 to tho competitive branch, while only £30 was left for tlio centres after making provision for championship-medal,, school medals, and certificates. It was recommended that a larger sliuro of the grant should be apportioned to the competitive than to tho humane branch. A suggestion that tho council should bold the moneys available for distribution as a fund for the encouragement, of swimming clubs and for assisting in the construction of baths was favourably discussed, and it was decided to request the centres to consider what minimum number of clubs should constitute a osntrc, tho opinion being expressed that it was not right for one club to form a, centre. The Auckland proposition that the championship meeting should extend over at least three days, with at least ono day's interval between each dav's rat-in" was lost. * a ' It was agreed to make the conference annual, the arrangements to bo made by the centre holding the championships for the year.
