fFKOM Our Own Correspondent.) WAIKOUAITI, February 1. The first meeting of the year ot the Waikouniti Borough Council was held on Holiday, the 25th ultimo, there Ireing present: The Mayor (Mr A. Heckler) and Crs Irwin, Maxwell, Russell, Smith, Stewart, and Williamson. Amongst the correspondence dealt with was a circular from the Government Accident Insurance Department, pointing out that, under the new "Workers' Compensation Aot, the liability of the council on account of accident to workmen employed was considerably increased, and that the department, wgb holding the council covered tinder the new act on the understanding that the neoessary increase in premium would be paid. A resolution approving of tile anion of the Insurance' Department, and agreeing to the increase of premium, was carried. The Mayor reported having received from Mr Alfred Vrio--', of Dunedin, as a gift to the council, a framed photograph of some of the first councillors of the borough. It, was agreed to accept the photograph, and to hnig it in the Council Chambers, and the clerk was instructed to write thanking Mr Price fcr the gift. A report dealing with the conference of local bodies held on January 20 was presented by the Mayor. It was dccided to procure a, further supply of tar and siso to form and gravel the upper portion of Dame street, leading from the Main road. A requisition to the Prime Minister, recommending the Government to consider the advisability of purchasing for closer settlement purposes the property known as Cherry Farm, was road to tile council, and a resolution heartily approving of the object o! the requisition was agreed to. The clerk was instructed to write to the conductor of the Wailiouatti Band (Mr G. J. L. Kerr), asking him to soe that all the band instrumentwere returned to the council. Accounts amounting to £49 8s 10(1 were passed tor payment. At the conclusion of the ordinary meeting of the council, a special meeting was i'eld,. at which it was unanimousiy decided that the half-holiday within the borough bo kept on Wednesday in each week for the ensuing year.
