The prices realised at; the opening wool sales of the season to-day were buoyant beyond even tho most sanguine anticipations. There was a good number of buyers present, representing the English, American, and Continental firms, and the local firms were also represented. Competition was vory keen, and the demand was particularly good for bright, ehowy fleeces and fine crossbreds, tho Auckland' Woollen Company being a considerable buyer in these lines. The dingy and shabby lines wore not in very much request, and it was m this direction that prices suffered most, wool lacking in brightness, failing tc bring moro than about s]d, compared with an average of 7sd. La St year lid was tho top price received for fine crossbred, and while a good many lots brought within the region of M-froro 7Jd to BJd scorned to bo about tho average. Bellies and pieces, when well got up, also met with a good demand, and the coarser wools only mot with a weak demand. It is interesting to note that fair prices wcro realised for lots oeanng the brawl of the broad arrow, llicse were consignments from tho Government experimental farm at Ruakura,' and he Southdowns .reached 7R the Loieestors 7d, and the crossbreds 7d per lb It is estimated that tho rise at tho sales is equivalent to an increase of 3d per lb on tho finer.wools over tho closing rates i l ™ sale of tho soason m February J«t Throughout to-day's sale the biddmg was spirited for all bright and showy wools, while Sh.ropshires also sold ■'exceptionally well, B|d per lb being received -ny the ■Matakohe woolgrowers, Messrs Uolm Bros. The only lines where competition was weak was amongst the coarse wool; but even hero the increase is id over the closing, rates of tho February sale. I ni addition, there has been a rise of about a halfpenny all round ovor "the prices realised at the southern sales last' week and altogether tho position is regarded as extremely satisfactory and lilccly to havp a far-reaching effect on business genorally in tho Auckland province.
