A. AND P. SHOWS

CLOTHA. The annual show of I he Chitha and -Maiau Agricultural ami Pastoral Society was held at Balclutha yesterday in superb summer weather, c'fho attendance was large, and well up to the average of former years. The same cannot be said of the entries, which (his year in many of the classes showed a lamentable decrease. Last year the .number of cattle- shovel was 51, but, this year the entries - dwindled to 33. In 1907, 59 draught and 126 light horses wore entered, as against 39 draughts and 120 light, horses this year. In 1907 the entries for sheep were 132. dogs 19, swino 1, and dairy produce 86. This year the entries for sheep were 88, dogs 17,' swine 3, and dairy produce 97. No Ayrshire cattle were shown, but (he shorthorns were 0 f capital quaiitv. some of the heifers looking promising. The best animal of the shorthorn breed was shown by Mr D. Murray, of Balclutha. The entries in crossbred cattle wore fairly representative, and somo of the cows were good, there wore, however, ] )0 entrio.n for the pen of fat bullocks or the fat cow or heifer classes. ' ■ The draught horses were, as usual, up to a very high standard of merit, notable among them being the three-year-old filly bilver Rose, the property of Mr R, Irving, Jim., of Clinton. Silver Rose, it will lie remembered, was first at Dimedm last year, and this 1 year was' first at, both tho Taiori and the Oamaru shows. Yesterday she was adjudged the best marc or filly on the ground. Another bearer of the champion card was Mr J, Rendell's entire, Agitator. J. he thoroughbreds were one of the leading features, and showed good form and fine condition. ■ The best thoroughbred entire pn the ground was Mr J. Cowie's New Hedford. The, ponies also made ai capital show. f ,J - he . , sn «?. all round, were good,! and black-faces were in evidence, which I was not the case last year. There was a big showing of some very useful Rom-ncys, bur tho inbreds and halfbrods were noe up to the high standards set by past shows, ilio crossbred ewes were distinctly creditable, and the crossbred hoggets would have done credit to. any district. In the J-zeicestere it was remarked that.while the prize-winners were excellent of. their kind, the others- fell far short of what they might have been or, as one of the judges remarked, wore "nowhere at all." Ewes with lambs.-at-foot were rather out of condition, but showed good breeding and' woo. One or two seemed rather, weak m the neck. The sheep that were-good were very good and among these waVa l niiddlinl CWC ' ' Tw °-' ooth "«Wf* were only j The dogs wore not numerous. Somo of' the'smooth collies would have been perfect hautboy not been on the heavy side. This section was on .the whole-good. Jh% "' y P rod L u «s excellent.
