WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

Some SO fewer votes were recorded at the Win- • i kouaiti polling booth than in 1905, and con.sidorably more interest was shown in the result of the licensing poll than in the par- ' liamentary election.- A large number,of,persons, amongst whom were many ladies, waited ' ,at the post office until midnight in the hope " of securing accurate informition regarding the votß in the Chalmers district, but the figures could not be obtained. WaikouMta district has been a temperance strbnghold for many years, and it is interesting to note that, the feeling in favour of no-license is stil;l increasing. In 1905 the three-fifths * majority was obtained with'll votes over,, and on Tuesday although the poll was smaller, the no-license proposal was carried with 23 V spare,, while reduction had a majority of 40, ; ir (Taking the tolaj figures' far the whole of tbeUiorthern portion-of:.the • Chalmers electorate as far south as, and 1 including Waitati, it is seen that the required, majorities 'in favour of both reduction, and no-license were obtained. > Now fiat tho licensing issue is settled for another term; it is'not likely that there will bo a large vole at the second ballot. On election day the ladies who are collect-:' ing in aid' of the hospital funds were very busy, and managed to secure a good many coritribtions. A house-to-house canvass is. ■now being carried out, the. collectors meet- . ing with «.-good reception, and it is.expected ■that a.'faiWy large sum will be forwardedfrom this district. ', The high winds prevalent' during the ; past few weeks have checked l the growing crops . and injured the grass to a considerable" extent. The ground -is" becoming very; dry and hard on the surfaces, &nc| a stoady rain is very much needed.. Turnips and grass recently sown are doing-no gbcri,'and.without/ moisture the seed;/will not germinate. /
