Friday, October 30. (Beforo His Honor Mr Justico Williams! FORGERT. Herbert Helm, who at the Bluff had pleaded guilty to a chargo of forging a chequo for £7 0s 4<l, was brought up for eentenee. Tho cheque was upon the Bank of New Zealand at Invercargill. It carried tho signaturo of "William Howard,". and was'made payable to "William Wilson.''

Prisoner said his age was 23 years, and in answer to llio customary question lie lmnded to tho court a written statement for the judge's perusal.'

Mr Mncasscy, representing the Crown, said that Helm was convicted here at the criminal sessions in May last for stealing a portmanteau from dining rooms in Maneo street. His Honor would remember that Helm drove round froiii hotel to hotel, and at last hurst open the pormantcau. For the theft lie was sciitenecci to three months' imprisonment, and he had been out of gaol only live weeks when he committed the forgery at the Bluff.' The Dunedin theft was tho only ppjvious conviction. Helm was a native of Tasmania, nnd a labourer by occupation. .

In answer to questions, his Honor was informed that Helm got the cheque cashed and was arrested within 20 minutes. The police found £6 14s 5d and a bottle of whisky' in his possession. The whisky and tho money practically accounted for the proceeds of the cheque. He had been in gaol since tho 2nd October. The depositions showed that he was half intoxicated at tho time of the offence.

His Honor: It seems amazing that any' body could bo found to cash the cheoue.

Mr Maeassey: It is a very loose system. _ His Honor sentenced Helm to six months' imprisonment.

IN BANCO. WEIT OF PROHIBITION. Mr Finch made application for a rule nisi for a writ of prohibition in respcet to I*. J. Sttllivam Oil the loth inst. Mr Widdowson convicted Mr Sullivan of having imported gamo in his possession. Mr Finch said the evidence showed that Mr Sullivan'had in his'possession at Burnside hares that had been taken in the Manictoto County. The Burnside works are in a protected district, for the Manio, toto County is by notification declared tb bo not a protected district, so that hares kjllcd there arc not imported game. Mr Finch contended that as the hares were not game when killed in the county, they never could bo imported game. The whole intention of the act was to preserve them for the purpose of increasing, and when tliev were dead tho intention of tho act was exhausted. If not imported game when they were killed, they never could become imported ,garnc. Mr Justico Williams granted tho tulc nisi as asked. Tho case will now go lo appeal.
